Penelope Franco
Language skills of students on show at Short Film Competition
On 14 April, the Language Centre in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) organised the first Short Film Competition. This was an opportunity for students to showcase both their film-making skills and their talent to work in French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Korean. International students were invited to make films in Mandarin.
Six films were shortlisted for the final stage of the competition. Sakanani, (made by students of Japanese) won multiple awards: Best Direction, Best Photography, and the coveted Audience Prize. Avant Mai, made by students of French, was named Best Movie and won the award for Best Screenplay. Penthouse, a Korean-language entry, won for Best Performance.
Thanking the students for their participation Penelope Franco, the Director of the Language Centre, said that she was very proud of them and was impressed by both their creativity and their film-making talent. She was particularly pleased by the high level of students’ language skills on display, reflecting their hard work and commitment.
Sakanani revolves around a student about to graduate, a theme that resonates with many final year students who, like the central character, may feel confused and uncertain about the future. The film depicts her thoughts and feelings, expressing her wish to be as free as a fish and not feel compelled to do things she does not like.
Explaining why they chose this topic and use fish as a metaphor, the production team said that Japan is a “high pressure” country, and many Japanese films reflect how social issues add to this pressure.
Xu Li, a student in the School of International Communication and Director of Sakanani, recalled the most meaningful part of working on the film was the teamwork. Everyone bounced their ideas around to inspire each other and to be as creative as possible.
“This experience gave us a new understanding of the culture behind Japanese language,” said Xu. “So, learning different languages actually affects the way we view the world and express our thoughts.”
Penelope Franco added that the film competition reflects the global and multi-cultural perspective of UNNC and encourages students to work creatively in teams. Students at UNNC have the opportunity to study foreign languages as part of their course or as elective modules. This improves their ability to understand and communicate across cultures and makes our graduates extremely attractive to employers across the world.
