我的大学乔虹玮、王一慧：“姐妹花”在宁诺勇敢蜕变

Qiao Hongwei and Wang Yihui, recent graduates of Finance, Accounting and Management programme, recalled their four years in the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) together and unanimously stated that "transformation" was the strongest benefit they gained here. The opportunities and challenges given by UNNC have changed many of the two ladies' choices both in their personalities and learning experiences. Let us listen to their stories.

双双被帝国理工录取的好姐妹乔虹玮和王一慧回忆起大学四年，一致表示“蜕变”是她们在宁诺描绘的最浓烈的底色。不论是个性还是学习生活，宁诺这样一个国际化的平台赋予她们的机遇和挑战都改变了两个女孩的许多选择，为她们的人生带来浓墨重彩的一页。

大学的他们也拿了不少奖学金，他们没有浪费，反而有了理财的意识。“大学四年中，我们拿到的奖学金累计有十万元，我们已经拿了一部分用作理财投资，剩下的会用来带父母去完成毕业旅行。”

“不是每个人一开始就闪闪发光”

“蜕变带给我力量。”乔虹玮认为自己四年最大的改变是在性格上，“我之前是一个有点内向的人，但是从大一开始，宁诺校内的CELE（Centre for English Language Education）英语语言教学中心老师们都不断在课堂上鼓励我们勇敢表达自己，加上周围小伙伴们的影响，我变得越来越开朗，越来越自信。

王一慧也谈到：“之前我在高中不是非常活泼的人，初入大学时给他人的印象也是“安静的学霸”，不太愿意表达自己。当时大一上写作课，考试结束后CELE的老师给每人写了封信，给我的那封信里写到‘希望在课堂上听见我更多的声音’，从那以后，我就开始注意更勇敢地表达自己。大一下学期的group discussion（小组讨论）中，我主动担任了协调者的角色，取得了很好的成绩，让我进一步更加肯定了老师对我的期许。”

正是有了这段受到老师引导下的改变，王一慧的大二更加顺风顺水：之前抗拒的office hour（面对面答疑）变得更加有吸引力；认识了许多好朋友，学会作为倾听者和观察者，观察他们如何和老师沟通， “虽然老师们上课都会无私地讲授很多，但是私下交流时会迸发更多的insights（深度见解），这让我们对于知识点的理解更加深入。”

除此之外，两人借助宁诺提供的国际化平台继续寻求改变：乔虹玮曾担任于宁波举办的第三届中东欧国家教育项目洽谈会志愿者、宁波市第一届模拟联合国大赛志愿者，并赴挪威参加夏校课程；王一慧则参加了校内组织AIESEC举办的“你好，生命”和“SunShine”活动，前者在温州帮助野生动物保护组织宣传动物保护和领养知识，后者在俄罗斯叶卡捷琳堡开展英语教学和中国文化的教育工作。

双双被录取的秘密：

寻找自身经历和梦校课程的契合点

谈到为何被帝国理工录取，王一慧认为非常重要的一点是通过头脑风暴、不断寻找自己的经历和心仪学校课程的契合点，不断挖掘并体现在文书里面，这样能够吸引他们，感受到学生对他们的喜爱；同时通过短期、长期的职业规划，展现自己对未来的清晰思考。

乔虹玮的规划离不开商学院搭建的平台。大二时，她参加了商学院的NAA（Nottingham Advantage Award）诺丁汉卓越奖商业咨询项目，由宁诺商学院老师带领，对接真实的企业，构思咨询报告，“通过一系列的学习，我掌握了咨询行业部分业界思维模式以及分析方法。”王一慧的规划同样与在商院的收获密不可分，她担任过商学院的研究助理，研究“社会环境对中国消费者手机品牌选择的影响”。这个经历不仅让她收获了市场调研和数据分析的能力，也让她进一步明确了自己对于消费行业的探索欲，为她之后在职场中做出细分行业的选择指明了方向。

她们也十分感谢商学院的老师们：“他们中的很多人已经取得了一定的成就，但他们在课堂上总能够循循善诱，引导还是'小白'的我们，课后也总是不厌其烦地解答我们的问题。这让我们浸润在知识中的同时，也总是被温暖沐浴着。” 由于出色的成绩和丰富的社会实践经历，两人均获得了多个奖学金，其中有国家奖学金，浙江省政府奖学金和宁诺的校长奖学金，后者在商学院仅有1%的名额。被问及奖学金利用率时，王一慧和乔虹玮表示，大学四年下来累计有将近十万的金额，她们作为商科生，选择拿一部分出来，加之所学知识的运用，尝试理财、投资等，比如学着分析外币的汇率走势，选择合适的时机运用远期合同等衍生品买卖英镑，为即将到来的留学生活做打算；同时想攒下一部分金额，毕业时带父母出去旅行，感念家人对自己的无私支持。学会回馈，是一种能力，也是一种品德。

学习秘籍：

音乐和体育加持，善问与规划并行

乔虹玮的特长有长笛和电子琴，她喜欢音乐带来的感官体验，也热爱通过音乐认识伙伴、提升自信、获得力量。王一慧也喜欢音乐，“音乐就像生活，缓急轻重都是节奏的表现。把握自己的节奏，就是把握生活的秘密。”同时，体育运动爱好者王一慧说：“运动分泌的多巴胺能带给我们清爽愉悦的体验，这也是放松方式的一种，就像中场休息，预备接下来的发力。”

关于学术成绩，乔虹玮认为，要珍惜老师们office hour的机会，多去多问，养成习惯。“我喜欢早早地赶到lecture（讲座）教室，选一个能近距离和老师沟通的位置，利用课后课间询问，不仅可以聊到本堂课的内容精髓，同时可能会拓宽到整个课程的逻辑框架，甚至是其他的有关个人规划的深远建议。”王一慧也同意这样的观点，“最初我也不怎么和老师交流，但经历了转变后，开始敢于讲出自己内心的想法，而不再总是一个人消化。其实，学会提问也是一个技能。”

除了多和老师交流，课前预习、课后整理，组建学习小组进行笔记分享、分工整理阅读材料，也是她们的秘诀。“尤其是time writing（限时写作）的课程，我们会约几个小伙伴一起讨论主题和需要的材料，互相交流获得灵感的碰撞。”

时间管理上，两人表示，一定要尽早规划属于自己的“时间线”，大三开始着手准备浏览各个心仪学校的硬性软性条件，比如GPA和项目等，并针对性地制定策略。大四时，乔虹玮平时进行扎实的时间管理，专心学术；每个周末专门留出一整天准备申请事项。“比如语言考试，由于宁诺是全英文教学，大一也进行了和雅思题型十分类似的学术写作和口语训练，所以不需要花费大量时间准备，而是把时间放在更需要的地方。”

不留遗憾，学会取舍

谈起四年的收获和遗憾，乔虹玮感慨没能参加更多的社团组织，通过社团积累下深厚的友谊。“开始时，我以学术为主，回头看发现体验也很重要，还是有得必有失吧。”关于做出选择，乔虹玮提出要根据实际情况、衡量得失，并拿考证举例：“我考了高级商业会计师证书，虽然帮助了某些课程的学习，也打下了更扎实的专业基础，但如果再给我一次选择，我会把考证的时间拿来做更多有趣且有意义的事。“

王一慧则提出鼓励大家放手去做，“我的一些选择还是略为保守，如果再给我一次机会，我会更加大胆。”她认为，某些时候需要做一个risk taker（风险承担者），不能只做百***有把握的事情，那样会被禁锢在自己设定的条条框框里。不给自己的潜力设限。勇敢地去冲击更好的，才能够不留遗憾。

两人同时肯定：在不同阶段学会多样化试错，不要盯着一个不放，这种避开其他路径的方式是不可取的。虽然每个人对于自己的未来有了初步的规划，但每个阶段的重点不同，空间也无限大，要勇于尝试、获得属于自己的蜕变。

Qiao Hongwei and Wang Yihui, both admitted into Imperial College, recalled their four years in the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) together and unanimously stated that "transformation" was the most substantial benefit they gained here. Transformation brings power

Recalling four years at UNNC, Hongwei believes that her most significant change has been in character. "I was a somewhat an introverted person before, but from the beginning of my freshman year, the tutors from CELE (Centre for English Language Education) in UNNC constantly encouraged us to express ourselves in class." Yihui recalled the encouragement from her tutor who wrote everyone a letter after their examinations. The letter to her conveyed the message that she should express herself more in class. Since then, Yihui’s voice has begun to become braver. This transformation under the guidance of their teachers eased their second year. They met many good friends and learned to become better listeners and observers.

Imperial College’s admission: Matching UNNC’s courses with experience

When discussing the reasons why Imperial College accepted them, Yihui believes that through brainstorming, it is essential to connect personal experience with your favourite course. You need to continually unearth and reflect on these connections in the application so that they grab the attention of the admission officers, making them feel the student’s inclinations.

At the same time, through long-term and short-term career planning, and clear thinking about the future also matters. In Hongwei’s second year, she participated in a business consulting project offered by the Nottingham Advantage Award (NAA). She was guided by teachers from NUBS China, to connect with real-world companies and participated in workshops offered by the Careers Office. Yihui was also a research assistant, conducting surveys and assisting professors with SPSS. The research project is entitled: Understanding how civil society influences consumers’ choice of mobile devices in China.

Through the platform provided by UNNC, they gained a variety of international experience, which greatly enhanced their practical awareness. Hongwei was a volunteer in the third Central and Eastern European Countries Education Project Fair and in the first round of the Model United Nations Competition in Ningbo. She also went to Norway to participate in a summer school course and gained tuition fee waivers. Yihui participated in the "Hello, Life" and "SunShine" activities organised by the organisation AIESEC on campus. The former project promoted animal rescue and wildlife protection in Wenzhou, while the latter was teaching English and Chinese culture in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Outstanding academic performance comes from scientific methods.

Due to their outstanding achievements and rich experience in social work, both students received multiple scholarships, including the Zhejiang Provincial Scholarship and the President Scholarship. The latter is only given to students whose performance is in the top 1% of the business school. When asked about how the scholarships were used, they said that they had both accumulated nearly 100,000RMB each in the past four years. As business students, they used some of it for financial investment and some of it was saved to take their parents travelling after graduating.

Hongwei believes that we should cherish the opportunities offered by office hours to ask more questions and develop better habits. She likes to rush to the lecture room early and choose a seat that has the best view and is convenient for communication with the teacher. During office hours, a conversation helps you to not only understand the key ideas of the class but also provides much further insights into the entire course. Yihui also agreed with this view, “I didn’t communicate much with the teachers at first, but after undergoing some change, I decided to put my head above the parapet and began to speak out my thoughts. In fact, learning to ask questions is a vital skill."

In addition to communicating with teachers, they also gave useful advice on preparing and reviewing classes, organising study groups to share notes and sorting out reading materials. In terms of time management, they planned their own "timeline" as early as possible.

In the final year, Hongwei used solid time management to concentrate on studies and on the weekends, she set aside an hour to prepare her postgraduate applications.

Apart from their outstanding academic performance, they also kept their passion for music and sports. Hongwei loves playing the flute and electronic organ, enjoying the sensory experience brought on by music. Yihui also likes music, "Music is the expression of rhythm. Maintaining your own rhythm is the secret of life." At the same time, both of them are sports enthusiasts. Yihui said, "Sports raise your dopamine levels and that can refresh and relax you, which is just like an intermission before preparing for your next effort."

Gains and thoughts

With regard to making choices, Hongwei suggested that gauging situations through a cost-benefit mindset is useful. Yihui encourages her younger peers to try things out without having regrets, "Some of my choices were slightly conservative. If you gave me another chance, I would be bolder." She believes that sometimes you ought to be a risk-taker, and you can’t do things with 100% certainty all the time.

They also affirmed that it is important to diversify your focus at different stages and not be limited by given standards. Although everyone has a preliminary plan for their own future, the focus of each stage is different and the space for opportunity is vast. You should be brave enough to try and transform yourself.
