Distinguished guests, dear teachers, fellow students, and parents, good morning!

My name is ZHAO Qianfan. I graduated from Hangzhou No.2 High School and now I’m a third-year student from SME and Shaw College. On behalf of all senior students, I warmly welcome all of you to celebrate this exciting moment of the first-year students starting their university life!

When I was drafting this speech, I asked myself, what are the suggestions that I wish I knew before starting my university life? Well, here they are, my two sincere suggestions to first-year students. No big deal, just two suggestions.

The first suggestion is about people — Please grab every opportunity to bond with faculty members. When I was a first-year student, one morning I was having breakfast and I suddenly found that the vice president, Professor ZHU Shiping was dining next to me. I was shy and didn’t know what to do. However, Professor ZHU moved his seat and started to talk to me. You see, on this magical campus, every teacher could talk to you like a friend. Don’t be shy. You could drop into their office hours to ask them questions; you could invite them for a coffee chat to talk about your life choices; you could even volunteer to be their teaching assistants or research assistants.

By interacting with our teachers, many of my friends receive sincere advices about their academic and career planning. Some of them are even recommended by professors to do researches in Nobel laboratories or get wonderful internship opportunities. There are a lot you could learn from your great teachers in and outside of the classroom. Just seize every opportunity to mingle with them.

My second suggestion is about habit — please make sure that you have the right habits. As the saying goes, “the chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken.” From my personal observation, I could tell you that bad habits could really destroy a person. In every university in the world, you could find frustrating examples of brilliant young people eroded by bad habits, and the sad truth is that they simply couldn’t change their habits – bad habits are very very powerful.

On the other hand, good habits are the most powerful tool to make you stronger and happier. Here is a little story. Two years ago, a young man decided to foster one good habit - to do long-distance running regularly. At first, things were tough. He had tons of coursework and a brand-new university life to fit into, and running was quite tiring. However, the young man persevered. After several months, he successfully established this habit and running became much easier. He has run over 1,000 kilometers in the past two years and has even completed a marathon. The habit of running gives this young man huge endurance and mental toughness. It also makes him physically stronger and more energetic, so that he could easily cope with his highly challenging investment banking internship. This story is true, because that young man is standing right in front of you giving this speech.

Dear first-year students, good habits have set many CUHK-Shenzhen students into an upper trend and become much better persons. For example, this summer, some of them attended summer schools around the world and achieved excellent grades. Some started their own research projects with renowned professors. Quite a few students have also completed internships at great companies in the Great Bay Area and other cities like Shanghai and Beijing. With right habits in place, you could definitely become one of them as well.

So, these are my two suggestions. One is about making friends with teachers, and the other is about forming good habits. It’s simple as that, just two suggestions. Hope you all have a happy, brilliant, and shining university life!

I would like to conclude my speech by making a few more remarks in Chinese. More than 70 years ago, at a time of extreme adversity, Mr. Ch’ien Mu and other scholars from China founded the New Asia College, the predecessor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. At that time, Ch’ien wrote the famous New Asia College Anthem, and I would like to share a few lines from it. Let's march over life, let's sing when we're tired; Pick the loads unbearable in our youth, let's walk hands in hands. Today, the little spark from seventy years ago has burst a flame in the vibrant and innovative city of Shenzhen. May The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen flourish, may the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area prosper, and may we all live up to our youth in such a great era. Let's move forward hands in hands. Thank you all!
