President Tang, professors, ladies and gentlemen,

I am Chen Yingtong, a graduate of the BBA (Honours) Programme in Accounting. After today's ceremony, the Class of 2021 will officially leave UIC. We are sad, but glad at the same time. We can't wait to move on to the next chapter of our lives!

Four years ago, my peers and I walked through the gate of UIC on the old campus, anticipating with excitement that we would soon move to this stunning and modern new campus. We live up to the slogan of grow with UIC. Our smiles, sweat and laughter, along with our determination and dedication, have made our 4-year journey so memorable. UIC's curriculum has allowed us to build a solid foundation of business knowledge and skills, as well as develop ourselves as all-round independent critical thinkers, and ethical citizens who care about our communities and the society. Members of the Class of 2021 are well prepared to go to different parts of the world to further our studies or work in multinational companies. I will be pursuing a master's degree in Business Analytics at the University of Hong Kong.

DBM provides us with an abundance of resources and gives us support in co-curricular and extracurricular activities to explore our interests and potentials. The Division has built a network of potential internship providers, including Big-4 accounting firms and many reputable companies. It hosts frequent guest lectures delivered by experts and seasoned scholars throughout each semester. Our interests in many new fields in business, such as cross-border finance and digital currency, were sparked by attending these lectures. DBM's research facilities and entrepreneurial project center are available to students who need meeting venues to brainstorm and complete their projects. Although the Class of 2021 will not be eligible, I'm glad to learn that next academic year, student research scholarship will be available to those students who are interested in conducting academic research.

We matured quickly from adolescents to adults while completing our degree programmes at UIC. Our teachers and the whole UIC staff gave us valuable advice and assistance. My peers and I are extremely fortunate to be under the guidance of so many caring and supportive teachers. They inspired us, encouraged us and helped us to do our best. On behalf of the Class of 2021, I would like to thank all the teachers who are so devoted to nurturing the young generation.

Finally, I would like to thank all the guests and students for attending this graduation ceremony. To all the 2021 graduates, we should all be extremely proud of ourselves to have attained so many incredible accomplishments. May our strength and courage be with us always, in the next stage and all stages in our lives!

Please stay in touch with our alma mater and each other. Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 2021!

President Tang, distinguished guests, teachers and fellow graduates, the 13th Graduation Ceremony of UIC, here we come. Well, graduates, we have made it. We just crossed the finish line at UIC together. I know some of you have returned by air or rail from home to attend the ceremony…Thank you all for coming to share and witness this great moment of our lives.

My name is Han Minxuan, a graduate in International Journalism. I am truly honored to be selected as representative and to address my graduating peers. Congratulations, class of 2021! You have survived the Typhon Mangkhut, the Coronavirus, two PE tests and are still alive. Today, we, the class of 2021, have been officially promoted as alumni of this young college. So, snap, clap, raise your hands high; rejoice and celebrate, honored 2021 graduates: this is our speech, and this is our day!

Today, I look back as I face forward to the future, I was determined to do journalism when I was a Year 1 student. And then I gained knowledge of digital marketing and advertising through Free Elective courses. As I realized that my genuine interest lies in an interdisciplinary field of Communications and Business, I set a rule for myself, to spare an hour per day in library to read related books. Then, I hunted for internships each summer holiday, and attended at least two business competitions each year. You see, I failed the competition the first time, then the second time, then the third time, and the fourth time…Guess what happened on the fifth time, I failed again. My mom doubted my choice. I said, yes mom, I am a fool, but I am a fool with plans. I believe those repeated failures can also be a great foundation on which to build and grow.

I’m not worried that we all will be successful someday, but I am worried that we won’t fail from time to time.

On this special day, I have something to share with you, and that is this: to “think wildly” with courage when you are about to handle a new task. I dreamed “wildly” when I first covered headline stories and shot a TV news package on my own, completely unprepared, but my ignorance of my own limitations looked like confidence and got me through.

Steve Jobs once said: “The only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” So, in closing, I believe we must be practical dreamers. Thanks to UIC for providing me with the tools to achieve a better version of myself. I would like to invite all my fellow graduates to give a big round of applause for those who have helped us out all along, our teachers, family and even strangers who have given us their wisdom.

We love you UIC! Our college is the best of the best!

Class of 2021, Happy Graduation!

Good afternoon, President Tang, teachers, proud parents and my fellow graduates. Thank you for joining me to celebrate this wonderful moment. I am Chen Yang from food science and technology program. Today is a day of joy, a proud day for my UIC classmates. We are living in an interesting time, a world that is full of challenges, including COVID-19. Still, we have managed to reach this wonderful milestone.

Congratulations to the Class of 2021!

I believe that all of you harbored a dream when you first entered UIC. Maybe you want to be enrolled by a top university for further study, maybe you want to join an ideal company for you career, or maybe you want to find someone that you are willing to share your life with. Whatever your dream, you have devoted the past four years to get here. Every single one of you has your own talent, and every single one of you has something to offer. UIC has given us numerous opportunities to discover our passion and callings. Even though we are going to graduate, I invite you to remember the words of Donald Levingston, a teacher from the School of Education of Harvard: our stories and experiences are the ladders that make it easier for us to touch the sky and grab the stars.

I still remember when I was a year two students. I was so confused about my future. I had no idea about which master program I should apply for or which industry I should enter after graduation. It was quite a frustrating period for me; and I believe some of you felt the same way. Later I talked to teachers and my friends, then I realized the college was not only about the acquisition of knowledge, but also the application of knowledge. So, I stared to use the theories that I learned from different courses into my academic projects and my internship. In addition to my own major, I also tried to apply the knowledge in other areas such as banking, education, and digital marketing. Eventually, I find my interest and talents point to the path of my future. Therefore, I strongly urge each one of you to be fearless to try new things that beyond your curriculum to better understand your inner voice and find out where you interest lies. The ceremony today marks an end of one of the most cherishable chapters in our journey. Now we are entering a new stage, so let us maintain our modesty, curiosity, diligence, and persistence.

At the end of my speech, I would like to invite all my fellow graduates to express our gratitude to our teachers, our friends, and the most importantly, our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents (if you have any). These are the people who always support us unconditionally.

Thank you.

President Tang, teachers, parents and fellow graduates.

I am Zhai Bojuan, a graduate of Communication. On this special day, thank you for celebrating it with us .

Today, I am here to talk about my life at UIC. It’s short, just a one year program, but it has totally changed my life.

I know some classmates think I am a Xue Ba. In English it means a nerd. In case you don’t know what a nerd is, it is someone with a GAOKAO score of over 700 or a GPA of just under 4. Frankly speaking, I did study hard at UIC, but actually I never thought I could be a Xue Ba before coming to UIC. You see, I did a really bad job on my bachelor degree. Nobody, not even my parents, know that I failed two subjects as an undergraduate and almost couldn’t graduate. Thanks to Covid, they are not here today .All of these failures were just because I didn’t know what my passion was and chose the wrong major. To be honest I had had a tough and disappointing time in college, and I used to think maybe my whole life will be like that, to be an ordinary person without passion and without success in any field.

But now I have found my passion and rebuilt my confidence at UIC, I realize I have a huge interest in Communication and Marketing so I study really hard in these two fields. I not only got a really good grade but I have also found a great internship at a great German company Siemens. I never thought I could work in an international company before. Suddenly, my whole life has been changed, and it started right here at UIC, I have become super confident and passionate, and I strongly believe I now own my future.

I would like to thank my family, professors and classmates who gave me unconditional support. You have made a miracle happen.

Finally, I want to share a quote with you. Someone wise and super-successful in the US said “you can’t connect dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards, so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.”

UIC is definitely a big dot in our life and I hope all of us can connect this dot to our bright and unlimited future.

Thank you and the best of luck to all of us.
