pass的意思，

究竟是“通过”还是“没通过”呢？

我们先来看看词典中 pass 的释义：

①to be successful in an exam,course, etc. 通过(考试、课程等)

你猜怎么着？我通过驾驶考试了！

The exam is so hard that only five percent of all applicantspass.

考试太难了，所有考生中只有5%通过。

②(of an official group of people)to give approval to something, especially by voting to make it law 通过，批准

扩建酒店的计划现已获得通过。

我们也经常见在玩游戏的时候说 pass，就表示这题跳过，过到下一题。

③to choose not to play in a part of a card game or not to answer a question in a quiz (纸牌游戏中不出牌或竞赛中不回答问题时的用语)过

pass 到底要怎么用？

pass 既是一个及物动词，也是一个不及物动词。

作及物动词的时候，pass 的意思是通过，所以 pass sth. 就是说通过了。通过考试就是 pass the exam， pass the interview 就是通过面试。

pass the exam通过考试

pass the interview通过面试

作不及物动词的时候，pass 的含义是不接受不想要，如果 pass 和 sth. 中间有介词 on，我们就要理解为没通过。

pass on sth. 放弃机会；不参加

torefuseanopportunityordecidenot to takepartin sth.

pass on the party不去聚会了

pass on his proposal 拒绝他的提议；他的提议没通过

pass on the party 就是不去聚会了，pass on his proposal 就表示他的提议没有被通过。

pass 不知道；过（约等于斗地主：不要，你出）

除了各类考试，pass 也常常出现在一些棋牌游戏里，意思就是过牌吧。

和老外一起斗地主的时候，如果你出了牌后，对方回答 pass，就是说他要不起你的牌，你可以直接过牌了。

在答题比赛里，也是一样的，你答不出来题就可以说 pass，意思就是我不知道答案，这道题直接跳过吧。

例句：

-The Ace of spades. It is your turn.

-I willpass.

—我出黑桃A。轮到你出牌了。

—我不要，你过吧。

pass key≠把钥匙递过来

pass 也有传递的意思，但是 pass key 并不是把钥匙传过来。其实，这里的 pass 是个名词，意思是通行，pass key 就是可以通行的钥匙，这种钥匙不会随随便便给人，要译为私人钥匙或专用钥匙。

boarding pass 登机牌；登机证；登船证

free pass 免费通行票；特别通行证

可以说 pass 这个词和中文“过”确实是有异曲同工之妙。既有“通过”的意思，又有“跳过”的意思，取决于具体的语境。

从另一个角度来看，还跟不同的选拔标准有关。世界上有两类选拔标准，一类叫认证制，一类叫淘汰制，区别的关键在于是否限制通过人数。

典型的认证制比如考驾照啊，英语四六级啊，只要你达到分数线，有一个算一个，通通放过。在这种情况下，pass 就是指通过。

典型的淘汰制则是招聘这种，限定了标准和合格人数的，此时，pass 代表的就是一个快速淘汰“友情参与者”的流程，即“淘汰”。

所以一般说某人 pass 考试或者考核我们就简单的理解为“通过”；而在对筛选对象一一询问，得到 pass 答案时，认为 pass 是并没有筛选进，而是被筛出、被“淘汰”的意思。

pass 其他比较常见的释义还有：

那条路正好穿过市中心。

⑤给；递；传递

Passthe salt, please.

请把盐递给我。
