On English learning
The essence of learning English well is to be always aware of the major differences between English and Chinese. English and Chinese are two languages that belong to different language families, so they have many distinct differences. They are as follows.
Alphabet: English does not have a logographic but rather uses an alphabet system for its writing. While in logographic systems, symbols represent the words themselves, in alphabet systems, words are made up of one or more letters. Due to this fundamental difference, Chinese learners may have great difficulty spelling English words correctly.
Phonology: some English phonemes do not exist in Chinese. Neither do they have parallel stress or intonation patterns. In addition, Chinese is a tone language, which means that it uses the pitch of the phoneme sound to distinguish word meaning. In English, in contrast, changes in pitch do not give the sound a different word meaning, but normally to emphasize or express emotion.
Vocabulary: among the many differences between English and Chinese in vocabulary, some deserving our special attention are: English has articles while Chinese doesn’t; in English, nouns are distinguished between accountable ones and unaccountable ones; English has a number of phrasal verbs (short verb +adverb/preposition),
Grammar: in English much information is carried by the use of auxiliaries and by verb inflections. Chinese, on the other hand, is an uninflected language and conveys meaning through word order, adverbials or shared understanding of the context. The concept of time in Chinese is not handled through the use of different tenses and verb forms, as it is in English. For all these reasons it is not surprising that Chinese learners have trouble with the complexities of the English verb system.
Discourse: in English passages, the main idea is always expressed explicitly at the beginning paragraphs. And the following ones are used to support the main idea. For each single paragraph, there is normally a topic sentence at the beginning of the paragraph (sometimes the last sentence or a middle one). Comparatively, in Chinese passages, the main idea is delivered in a much less direct or straightforward way.
The above are some marked differences between English and Chinese. These differences, along with others, make English learning a serious challenge for Chinese native speakers. For English teachers, therefore, it is fundamental to bear in mind these differences while preparing a lesson and to remind students of them while teaching. To be a qualified English teacher, one need read as much literature as possible to have a good grasp of and thus a profound reflection on both languages. This demands an extensive reading about not only both languages, but also both cultures. When giving a class, highlight both the similarities and differences between two languages. A comparison of their similarities helps students understand the targeted points in an analogous way, and a contrast of their differences will arouse the students’ attention to some potential mistakes. In one word, comparison and contrast is the best way to success in English learning.
